Cataract Surgery

The Basics of Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgical procedures performed by your Ophthalmologist. It requires your surgeon to make a very small incision on the side of your cornea (the front part of your eye) where they insert a tiny instrument that uses state of the art, high frequency ultrasound (known as phacoemulsification) to break up the center of your clouded lens (cataract) and carefully suction it out.

Once your cataract has been removed (the clouded lens), a new intraocular lens (IOL) implant that is made of plastic, silicone or acrylic will be inserted. This new, clear lens remains in your eye permanently.
