Refraction and Retinal Imaging

Detecting and Managing Eye Conditions with Refraction and Retinal Imaging

The refraction test, also termed vision test, is an examination that tests an individual’s ability to see an object at a specific distance. The test involves looking through a device called a phoropter to read letters or recognize symbols on a wall chart through lenses of differing strength which are contained within the device. (During this process, the eye doctor will ask you “Which is better…one or two?”). This test is performed as part of a normal eye examination to determine whether an individual has normal vision. It is also used to determine the prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Retinal imaging is a recent technological advancement in eyecare. It enables your ophthalmologist to capture a digital image of the retina, blood vessels and optic nerve located at the back of your eyes. This aids in the early detection and management of diseases that can affect both your eyes and overall health. Retinal Imaging includes techniques such as OCT, topography or fundus photos. These tests can be crucial in diagnosing a disease in its early stages and allow your doctor to detect abnormalities in the back of the eye, on the eye's surface or inside the eye
